5 Ways to Plan Your Shifts: Which Strategy Fits Your Life?

There is no single right way to plan shifts. Here is how to match your strategy to your current priorities.

Strategy 1: Income Optimiser

**Best for:** When you want to maximise earnings. New house, big holiday, or just tired of barely scraping by.

The Income strategy scans your available shifts and ranks them by effective hourly rate after enhancements. It favours night shifts, weekend work, and bank shifts. The trade-off: higher earnings mean higher fatigue load. The Fatigue vs Paycheck strip shows the exchange rate.

**Fatigue impact:** High. Expect more night clusters and weekend work.

Strategy 2: Health First

**Best for:** When recovery is your priority. Recovering from illness, managing chronic fatigue, or protecting long-term health.

The Recovery strategy minimises everything that drives your fatigue score: night clustering, consecutive days over four, short turnarounds, and circadian disruption. It produces slower, lower patterns with more rest days between shifts.

**Fatigue impact:** Low. This is the most sustainable pattern.

Strategy 3: Shift Stacked

**Best for:** When you want maximum days off. Same total hours, packed into tight blocks separated by long rest periods.

The Stacked strategy clusters your shifts into blocks of 3-5 consecutive days. Fatigue is higher during work blocks, but recovery periods are longer and more restorative. Good for people with hobbies, side projects, or childcare arrangements.

**Fatigue impact:** Moderate during blocks, low overall.

Strategy 4: Annual Leave Maximised

**Best for:** When you want to stretch your leave furthest by targeting bridge days.

The Leave strategy analyses your rota and identifies the optimal positions for every annual leave day. It calculates which bridge days give you the longest contiguous breaks for the least leave cost.

**Fatigue impact:** Variable, depending on how you use the extra rest.

Strategy 5: Balanced

**Best for:** When you do not have a strong priority either way. The default for most people most of the time.

The Balanced strategy optimises across all dimensions without favouring any single one. It produces moderate earnings, moderate recovery, and moderate fatigue.

**Fatigue impact:** Moderate. The middle path.

Which Strategy Is Right for You?

Shiftlyx does not lock you into one strategy. You can switch every month based on what is happening in your life. The planner shows you the fatigue score and earnings estimate for each strategy so you can compare before committing.

Switch strategies from the Planning screen. The planner will generate new candidates based on your chosen approach.
