Watch Out: 3 Fatigue Mistakes Nurses Make with Bank Shifts
Bank shifts pay well but can silently push your fatigue into dangerous territory. Here is what to check before picking one up.
Mistake 1: Ignoring the Recovery Gap
You finish a night shift at 7am. There is a bank shift available for the same night, starting at 7pm. Twelve hours gap. The rota system sees that as adequate since the working time regulations require 11 consecutive hours rest in 24.
But 12 hours from 7am to 7pm includes your commute, winding down, falling asleep, getting 4-5 hours of daytime sleep, waking up, eating, and commuting back. The bank shift system only sees the gap. It does not see the recovery.
**Check before saying yes:** Look at the actual gap between the end of your last shift and the start of the bank shift. If it is less than 14 hours, your sleep will be compromised. If it is less than 12, decline.
Mistake 2: Stacking Bank Shifts on Days 5-6
Your base rota has you working Monday through Thursday. A Friday bank shift is available. It is only one extra day, right?
Research shows that error rates climb sharply after day five of consecutive work. Adding a bank shift on day five or six of an existing stretch compounds the risk disproportionately. The fifth day is not like the first day plus 20 percent. It is like the first day multiplied.
**Check before saying yes:** Count your consecutive days including the bank shift. If the total exceeds 5, the fatigue risk is significantly higher than the pay justifies.
Mistake 3: Forgetting the Commute Cost
A bank shift at a different hospital might pay well but add 45 minutes each way to your commute. That 1.5 hours comes directly out of your recovery window. A 12-hour bank shift is really a 13.5-hour commitment when you factor in travel.
**Check before saying yes:** Include commute time in your fatigue calculation. Shiftlyx does this automatically when you add your commute settings. A bank shift at a different site requires updating your commute parameters.
How Shiftlyx Helps
Before you accept a bank shift, check your Fatigue Score with the bank shift included. Shiftlyx lets you preview the impact: "If you add this shift, your score will increase from 42 to 58." That preview makes the trade-off visible.
The data is clear: bank shifts are a major contributor to fatigue spikes. Use the preview, not your instincts, to decide.
