The NHS Rota Trick That Gives You a 4-Day Weekend Every Month

One simple pattern change in how you arrange 5 shifts can unlock consistent long weekends.

The Problem with the Standard Pattern

Most nurses work 5 shifts spread across a 7-day week. The typical pattern looks like: work two days, off one, work three days, off one. You end up with single days off scattered through the week. No block of consecutive rest. No proper recovery.

The Trick: The 5-2 Stack

The idea is simple: instead of spreading 5 shifts across 7 days, compress them into 5 consecutive days. This gives you 2 full consecutive days off.

Wait, that is the same number of days off. The trick is in the placement.

**The real trick:** Align your 5-shift stack so that your 2 days off fall on a Saturday-Sunday or Sunday-Monday. Every stack that does this effectively gives you a long weekend. Two stacks per month equals two long weekends.

How to Execute It

**Step 1:** Identify which days in your rota are your priority days off (for most people, Saturday and Sunday, or Friday and Saturday).

**Step 2:** Cluster your 5 shifts in the five days that are NOT your priority days.

**Step 3:** If the rota does not naturally give you this pattern, use shift swaps to reposition your shifts.

**Example:** Your priority days off are Saturday and Sunday. Arrange to work Monday through Friday. You work 5 shifts, get Saturday and Sunday off. That is a 4-day weekend if you had Thursday and Friday as your natural rest days, or a 2-day weekend if those were work days.

The Stacking Advantage

Stacking 5 shifts back to back increases your fatigue during the work block but consolidates recovery into a meaningful rest period. Compare:

**Spread pattern:** Work Mon, Tue, off Wed, work Thu, Fri, Sat, off Sun. You never get more than 2 consecutive days off.

**Stacked pattern:** Work Mon-Fri, off Sat-Sun. Same 5 shifts. Same total rest days. But a continuous 2-day recovery window instead of fragmented single days.
