Your Commute Is Adding 30% to Your Fatigue Load (Here's the Proof)

The drive home after a shift is not just inconvenient. It is a measurable fatigue multiplier.

The Hidden Load

Your fatigue score calculates the recovery gap as the time between the end of one shift and the start of the next. But that gap includes your commute. A 45-minute commute each way subtracts 1.5 hours from your effective recovery window.

**Example:** You finish at 9pm and start at 8am. The rota says 11 hours. Subtract 45 minutes to get home, 30 minutes to wind down, 30 minutes to prepare for the next shift, and 45 minutes to commute in the morning. Your effective recovery is closer to 7.5 hours.

The Safety Angle

Drowsy driving after a night shift is a serious risk. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that drivers who sleep 5-6 hours in 24 are twice as likely to crash as drivers who get 7+ hours. After a night shift, many nurses are operating on 4-5 hours of daytime sleep.

The shift itself is not the most dangerous part of your workday. The drive home might be.

What the Research Says

A 2021 survey of NHS nurses published in Nursing Times found that 43 percent reported falling asleep or almost falling asleep while driving home after a night shift. The average commute time for NHS staff is 43 minutes one way. For rural trusts, it is often significantly longer.

How to Mitigate Commute Fatigue

**Short term:** If you feel drowsy after a shift, wait 15-20 minutes before driving. A short nap, caffeine, and fresh air can make a significant difference. Better to arrive late than not at all.

**Medium term:** Consider whether carpooling or public transport (where you can sleep) is an option for night shifts. Some trusts offer staff rest facilities. Use them.

**Long term:** Include commute time in your fatigue calculations. Shiftlyx's commute engine lets you add your travel time so your Fatigue Score accounts for the real recovery gap, not just the rota gap. When your commute pushes a borderline pattern into the red, you can see it before you feel it.
