30 Days of Shiftlyx: What We Learned Building for NHS Shift Workers
Behind the scenes of building an app for people who work while the world sleeps. Lessons, data, and what is next.
The Waitlist Told Us Something
When we opened the Shiftlyx waitlist, we expected signups from nurses. We got them. But we also got paramedics, midwives, HCAs, theatre staff, porters, doctors, and dental nurses. The diversity of shift workers in healthcare is broader than any single role.
The common thread was not profession. It was the same sentence repeated across hundreds of signup forms: "I have never had a tool that tells me whether my schedule is sustainable."
What We Learned About Planning Strategies
The five planning strategies (Income, Recovery, Stacked, Leave, Balanced) were designed based on our own experience with shift work. We assumed most users would default to Balanced.
The data from early users showed something different. Usage clustered at the extremes: 40 percent of users immediately selected Income, 35 percent selected Recovery. Balanced was the least-used strategy.
The split maps onto two types of shift workers: those who are optimising for money to meet life goals, and those who are optimising for health because they are already feeling the effects. Both are valid. The app needs to serve both.
The Most Requested Feature
Across feedback, one request came up more than any other: automatic sync with NHS rota systems.
We understand why. Manual entry creates friction even if it takes two minutes. But automatic sync would require NHS trusts to expose personal user APIs, which they are unlikely to do in the near term. We chose voice entry as the friction-killer instead. Florence was our answer.
The Surprise: Partner Sync
We added Partner Sync as a niche feature for couples. It became one of the most used features in the first month. The use case went beyond couples: parents sharing patterns with teenagers, adult children sharing with elderly parents, flatmates coordinating quiet hours.
Shift work is not an individual experience. It affects everyone around you. Tools that help you share the load are not nice to have. They are essential.
What's Next
**Rota import improvements.** We are working on easier ways to get your NHS shifts into Shiftlyx, including screenshot parsing and calendar file import.
**Group planning.** For teams that want to share shift swap availability within their friend group (not their employer).
**Wearable integration.** Connecting fatigue data to sleep tracking from Apple Watch and Fitbit for a more complete picture.
Thank You
To the 2,500+ NHS workers who joined the waitlist in the first 30 days: thank you. You told us what you needed. We built it. And we are not done.
